4 pillars in shared mobility (especially) after Covid-19

Is shared mobility going to survive after Covid-19? Are there going to be any changes? Will shared mobility providers going to finally embrace an advanced telematics solution? The future is here and we  should be more prepared than ever. Are we ready to take action so the future will not surprise us again?

The pandemic of Covid-19 shut everybody inside and forced us to move on with our lives in a way in which we did not even think about it before. Though times are showing what is more creative from people or…. the opposite. What about industries? What about business? What about all the companies involved in mobility. For sure, the worldwide lockdown made a strong mark between public transportation and private transportation, between own and shared, between new vehicles and the present ones.

At the end of 2019 the studies and the forecasts had some numbers which were easily deleted or contradicted at the beginning of 2020. We can say there was a period in which the statistics went crazy. Nobody knew what to believe some actions that were taken affected some businesses and industries on a long term.

If in the past years, we were talking about efficiency or fleet management having in mind some ideas, for sure after COVID-19 period the mobility market is reevaluated and new objectives are set.

How is the new vehicle market evolving in the near future?

The acquisition of electrical vehicles will face an increase comparison of traditional ones?

Will car sharing, car rental and ride hailing vertical still have a future?

For all the answers to these questions it is easy to look in the past and see what we have not done yet. Only in this way, we will be prepared for the future and we will have to ability to face any challenge that might appear including from technological point of view.

Efficiency

By the time the acquisition of new vehicles will decrease efficiency will become the main aspect in fleet management and mobility. Everybody will try to maintain the presents fleets as healthy as possible and being efficient will have new connotation in the future. It is important to take care of what we have and to do as much as possible to manage the new challenges with the present resources. Is it possible? Did the companies and providers rethink their strategy in the past 3 months? Being
efficient is being smart in choosing quality solution.

Prediction

A good strategy helps you to have half of the objective solved. Preparation is one of the aspect but after gathering the information the analysis takes the most important place. What would be prediction without Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence algorithms? Can we predict something if the data are not accurate? Are able or ready to have all the things in one place without buying anything new and just analyze what we have right now? Making decision is on maybe the hardest part in mobility.
Taking actions is probably even harder. That is why only having the full picture we can do that.

Maintenance

Advanced telematics solution remains the first layer of any mobility project. Even if we are talking about public transportation, taxi, car sharing or even autonomous driving, telematics at its finest is the best approach for it. In order to avoid extra costs with replacement of components and to reduce downtime when the vehicle is staying in a workshop, maintenance is the key to efficiency and maximizing the profit. To maintain means to take action before a DTC will happen.
Are we ready for this? Are we going to replace a vehicle component if we knew before that in a certain number of days will broke and can cause many other failure processes inside the vehicle? Predictive maintenance concept will get more and more popularity in the near future.

Management and Action

100% problem localization in a subsystem makes place for next actions. Sometimes the decision are based only related to the price paid in the present in order to minimize the present expenses without thinking of the future needs or having in mind future updates.
An advanced telematics solution not only that should be seen as an investment but offer also the possibility to be update at minimum costs. Making a comparison with consumers goods it is time to change the vision an approach when it comes to fleet management and mobility. If we have the latest version of smartphone because offers us the possibility to stay connected with the present why not treat the fleets with same responsibility and install a high-end telematics solution?

Advanced telematics solutions represents the key for the future challenges in the mobility market and offers the possibility to always be ready in prepared for the latest developments in the industry.

The role of Telematics in Self Driving Transportation presented at Dubai World Congress for SD Transport

The first edition of Dubai World Congress for Self Driving Transportation brought together the main experts in mobility, transportation and telematics for 2 days in Dubai. The vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make 25% of all trips in Dubai smart and driverless by 2030 is a smart and challenging idea that will happen for sure. CANGO had a seminar and developed the idea of the importance of telematics for self driving transportation.

The estimations, studies or reports are showing a growing trend and numbers seems to get higher from year to year. Car market for partially autonomous driving will be around $36 billion by 2025.

But when it comes to automation there are 6 levels already defined and already known in the industry. Level 0 is considered a car, which requires the full attention and action of the driver, and level 5 is allocated for the fully automated vehicles. As vehicles move towards level 3, where a driver can take his hand off the steering wheel, the dependency on telematics will increase. Vehicle speed, health, weather and road conditions, location etc will need to be constantly monitored to ensure safety and efficiency. Finally, for fleets to move synchronously autonomous vehicles will have to transmit their whereabouts and sync with the leading vehicle, which will happen through telematics.

Safety and efficiency are 2 points which can be solved for sure with telematics. Telematics is not only about trace and tracking. It is about diagnose the vehicle, the engine, correlate the data with what comes from the sensors, see in real time what is happening with the engine and verify is the safety features are on or used by the passengers. Telematics gets back to CANbus which is for the vehicle like the blood system for the humans. Through CANbus all the information, data and details circulates and give command to the vehicle  to behave in a certain way on the road.

CANGO has 10 years experience in CANbus area and so far developed many application for open platform hardware telematics units which are used in different projects related to mobility. Soon we will talk about city as a service, car as a service, vehicle as a market place and each of it will be customized with different apps that the final user will be able to add on the same platform. About Dubai World Congress for Self Driving Transportation

The Congress brings together experts in the field of Self-driving technology to enhance and accelerate the adoption of Self-Driving Technology globally and contribute to the realization of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make 25% of all trips in Dubai smart and driverless by 2030.

The Next Generation of Telematics Technology presented in Prague

The 9th edition of the Telematics Conference for Central and Eastern Europe took place in the beautiful city of Prague, on the 26th of September.

The general topic of the conference was related to the next generation of Telematics Technology and CANGO took this opportunity to present the latest concept called “telematics as a service”.

Technology advances, demographic needs are changing, mobility industry is pushing telematics to come up with new solutions, and the providers are trying to keep up the step with the innovation trends. Soon we will talk about vehicle as a service, car as a service, or vehicle as a marketplace.

Changing the focus from TCO to value growth enables in the same time many other adjacent or complementary opportunities like smart mobility projects, smart cities solutions based on car sharing and ride sharing vehicles, smart public transportation. In a world full of sensors and connectivity, being open and prepared for the new challenges is the key to success in telematics business.

During the Conference Event Bianca Barbu, CMO of CANGO, moderated one of the panel discussion, the main topic discussed was “telematics as a service”, and how the applications will change the perspective of the future telematics technologies.

In the panel discussion were involved representatives of different areas of the Telematics world with different focuses related to the future of Telematics Industry. As a conclusion of the panel, the main idea remained the one that without telematics there is no solid based for future development. The trend is to move to open hardware platform so no matter what the industry or the profile of the user is to be able to benefit of the latest developments in the near future and combine them with other complementary features.

CANGO is moving forward with the concept and soon will present the role of Telematics in Self Driving Transportation.

“The trend is to go to open platform telematics”

Everyone talks about “Internet of Things”, “big data”, and “cloud” services. But nobody wants to buy additional hardware to get access to the CAN-based in-vehicle networks.

Vision of fleet telematics in 2025 (Source: Frost & Sullivan)

The last two years were intense and in the same time brought an air of change in telematics industry. According to the studies and reports that are available, at this point many acquisitions and optic changes took place in the market. In addition, the requirements in the market are different and the regulations are new. The trend is moving to “smart” cities approach, “smart” mobility and self-driving transportation.

What about the other industries? What are their requirements and what are the trends? How wide is the offer? Can the hardware offered still fulfill all demands? Sure is that technology advances and demographic needs are changing, mobility industry is pushing telematics to come up with new solutions, and the providers are trying to keep up the step with the innovation trends. Everything will go electric or autonomous, everything should be in one place but shared and opened to the others, the data are still the gold but how they are shapes is the real treasure.

In the automotive industry, if we talk about small passenger cars or big fleet of trucks, the main aspect in the discussion is the value gained by using each type of vehicle. Mirroring this into services area the focus is similar and it is moving from TCO (total cost of ownership) to value created. The users are looking for solutions that are more reliable with the possibility of updating them in time without adding any new hardware. Soon we will talk about vehicle as a service, car as a service, or vehicle as a marketplace. The value will consist in the number and quality of the application accessed in each vehicle or telematics devices.

We understood this opportunity and in 2019 we decided to go outside the box in the real way. Even, if we will still maintain the hardware as part of their business, we have decided to open our solutions and license our knowledge to third-party telematics devices that are open platform based. As the recipient of the 2018 for Customer Value Leadership Award for CAN-based solution named by Frost and Sullivan, this move looks like offering to all telematics players the same value for their solutions and products.

The CAN Library supports a broad range of use cases

Our CAN-related services empower any telematics supplier provider to read any vehicle data in any industry. The approach is quite simple and it is based on an operating system that is free and easy to access: Android. The CAN-related services for Android run in the background of any 3rd party telematics device without any user interaction or interface, except the one for configuring it. The service runs with a higher priority than inactive or invisible activities and therefore it is less likely that the Android system terminates them for resource management.

From now on using our CAN-related service, any 3rd party device will act like a firewall necessary to safeguard against hazards caused by interference with vehicle computer systems.

Bianca Barbu (Chief Marketing Officer, Cango) at the 5th Telematics Confernce in Dubai, March 2019: “All the functionalities that we offered until now inside our hardware are ready to be offered as applications on third party open platform telematics units. In this way we want and we are able to license our knowledge in any telematics devices and it is not only CAN libraries but also we build applications like Driver Performance Assistance, MIL&DTC codes, Tachograph, FMS2IP, car sharing, or any other application that a partner can imagine.”

The main advantage of this type of service is, that based on it, an unlimited type of application can be built. In this way, the final user, instead of paying for a new additional hardware if they need a new functionality or feature for their fleet, will only add the application. Getting this type of solution the final client will gain the most advantages in the first place because there will be no time and costs spent with the installation and integration of a new hardware. Also, there are many advantages for the telematics solution providers because they will always be ready for the new challenges of the market and requirements of the clients.

The main advantages and benefits that the CANrelated service are the flexibility and control. Moreover, in this situation we are talking about real-time remote control with everything settable and a zero rate of failure and 100-percent data accuracy.

The CAN library is the base for any telematics application that can be developed. As mentioned, there is no need to add any new hardware to get the TPMS because there will be an application for it. Also applications for trailer data without any external device or an application for the DTC codes and MIL. One of the most important applications is the Lucas driver performance assistant, which coaches the vehicle conductor in real-time by calculating more than 49 parameters. All the application can be combined with artificial intelligence or machine learning to evolve to predictive traffic, usage-based insurance, avoiding collisions, or anomalies on the road.

The trend is to go to open platform telematics, which opens opportunities for other industries, and helps achieving the objectives related to the regulations around the world in increasing the quality of life by decreasing the CO2 emission and saving more fuel. This business model proposed by us is the answer to the question: Is there an allin-one solution that can be updated anytime, over-the-air, with the latest developments on the market and with minimum costs?
