The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are codes that notify you about an issue. Each code corresponds to a fault detected in the car. When the vehicle detects a problem, it will activate the corresponding trouble code.

The MIL/DTC alerts were designed for Trucks and Busses with J1939 and/or J1708 protocol, to be sent by the serial port, but will also be available with proprietary protocols. Typically the DTC codes are present on the Engine CAN, so just activating the T5 frame and you will be able to get this data.
