A malfunction indicator lamp is a tell-tale that a computerized engine-management system uses to indicate a malfunction. Found on most automobiles' instrument panel, it usually bears the legend check engine, service engine soon, or a pictogram of an engine - and when illuminated, it is typically either an amber or red color. The light general has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault) and flashing (indicating a severe fault).
The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are codes that notify you about an issue. Each code corresponds to a fault detected in the car. When the vehicle detects a problem, it will activate the corresponding trouble code.

The MIL/DTC alerts were designed for Trucks and Busses with J1939 and/or J1708 protocol, to be sent by the serial port, but will also be available with proprietary protocols. Typically the DTC codes are present on the Engine CAN, so just activating the T5 frame and you will be able to get this data.
How we output the data:
The DTC information is outputted by the FMS interface via serial port or Bluetooth in ASCII format. The output is divided into serial frames that consist of one line holding many parameter values separated by the field separator character (comma by default).
